Founded on April 1st, 1796, Dayton was named after the owner of the land, Jonathan Dayton, a captain in the American Revolutionary War and a signer of the U.S. Constitution. The city served as the chief transportation route for western Ohio up until the 1850s, allowing it to become one of the largest and wealthiest communities in Ohio. Its economy was based in heavy manufacturing for a long time. Today, the economy is a service economy, especially in the sectors of insurance, legal, healthcare, and government, yet the city still hosts significant industrial, aerospace, and technological/engineering research activity.

Just a few of these people include actor Martin Sheen, actors and brothers Rob Lowe and Chad Lowe, founder of the Christian series Veggie Tales Mike Nawrocki, baseball pitcher Roger Clemens, first Director of the CIA Sidney Souers, founder of the Iams pet food company Paul Iams, poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, chef and Emmy-winning TV host Ming Tsai, musician Robert Pollard, and most notably the inventors of the airplane: the Wright brothers. The city was also the site of a speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. on November 29th, 1964, at what is now known as the Thomas J. Frericks Center located on the University of Dayton campus.
