Englewood went by several different names in its formative years. Beginning around 1800, Quakers from Randolph County, NC, began coming to the area, and they established Randolph Township in 1804. Later settlers from Harrisburg, PA, called the area Harrisburg, the name under which the town was first founded in 1841. In the 1870s, the town became known as Iamton and then Jamton, named for the town's first postmaster, Harvey Iams (the Jamton derivative being attributable to the interchangeability of the two letters still common at that time). Then in 1898, local businessmen held a contest to choose a new town name. Englewood was the winner, and became the town name in July 1899. The village of Englewood was incorporated in 1914, and Englewood became a city in 1971, having passed the state threshold of 5,000 residents for that designation. | |
