| | | | | | | | Located WNW of Vandalia, Greenville has a total area of 6 square miles in the center of Darke County and is home to about 13,000 people. The small city swells each August, however, with the annual arrival of the Great Darke County Fair, which sees nearly 20,000 people arrive each year during its nine-day run of rides, food, music and fun.
Greenville is the historic location of Fort Greene Ville, a pioneer fort built under General Anthony Wayne's command (and named for fellow General Nathanael Greene) that was the largest wooden fortification ever built, encompassing more than 55 acres. It was here that the Treaty of Greenville was signed on August 3, 1795, between the United States and a coalition of Native Americans and Frontiers men known as the Western Confederacy. Following as it did the Native American loss at the Battle of Fallen Timbers near present-day Toledo, the treaty signaled the end of the decade-long Northwest Indian War and resulted in the ceding of much of what is now Ohio (along with other lands, including what are now Chicago and Detroit) to the United States.
Greenville is also home to a local history museum, the Garst Museum, which contains the largest known collections of memorabilia of famed sharpshooter Annie Oakley and noted writer, broadcaster and world explorer Lowell Thomas, both of whom were born nearby. The museum also houses a number of artifacts related to Anthony Wayne, Native Americans and the Treaty of Greenville.
