First settled in the late 18th century, "Springborough" (as it was first named) was founded in 1815 by Jonathan Wright, and most of the area's early settlers were Quakers. Springboro was a primary stop along the Underground Railroad in the years leading up to and during the Civil War, providing shelter to escaping slaves. Many of the original homes used as part of the Railroad network still stand in Springboro's six-block historic district, which is on the National Register. In 1999, Springboro was the first city to erect an Ohio Underground Railroad Historic Marker.

Springboro is home to the 1911 Wright "B" Flyer Museum, located at the Dayton-Wright Brothers Airport, which houses a flying replica of Orville and Wilbur Wright's second airplane. Guests can try their hand at "flying" the Wright "B" on the museum's flight simulator, or ride along on an orientation flight of the replica plane itself. Springboro also is home to La Comedia, one of the nation's largest professional dinner theaters. Opened in 1975 as the Miami Valley Dinner Theatre, La Comedia puts on six Broadway-style productions each year.
